My 18-year-old daughter died giving birth to her son, and for the next ten years I raised him alone without ever knowing who his father was. Then one afternoon, I found a strange woman standing at my daughter’s grave. She handed me a sealed envelope with my name written in my daughter’s handwriting and whispered: “I made her a promise. It’s finally time for you to know the truth.” When my daughter first told me she was pregnant, she had barely turned eighteen. I asked about the father more times than I can remember. “Who is he?” “Does he know?” “Is he going to help you?” But every time, she gave me the same answer. “Mom, please. I can handle this myself.” She refused to tell me his name. She wouldn’t even tell me whether he knew she was expecting. Then the day she went into labor, everything changed.
